The Changeling

The Changeling, written in 1622, is perhaps the greatest example we have of tragedy in the English manner where irony and humour serve to enrich our understanding and enjoyment. The stories of Beatrice-Joanna, a young girl driven to murder by infatuation and repression, and Isabella, the young wife of a jealous madhouse keeper, besieged by lovers, are told with startling psychological insight and narrative drive.
